Brown Sugar Glazed Ham

Why This Recipe Works

The magic of this dish lies in the balance of flavors. Brown sugar provides rich sweetness, while mustard and spices add warmth and depth. As the ham bakes, the glaze melts and caramelizes, forming a glossy, flavorful crust that locks in moisture and enhances every slice.

Ingredients

  • 1 fully cooked bone-in ham (about 7–9 pounds)
  • 1½ cups brown sugar (packed)
  • 3 tablespoons Dijon or yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves (optional but traditional)
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ham
Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C). Place the ham cut-side down in a roasting pan. If desired, score the surface of the ham in a shallow diamond pattern for a classic look and better glaze absorption.
  2. Make the Glaze
In a bowl, mix the brown sugar, mustard, honey (or maple syrup), cinnamon, cloves, and black pepper until smooth and thick.
  3. Glaze and Bake
Generously spread half of the glaze over the ham. Cover loosely with foil and bake for about 15 minutes per pound.
  4. Caramelize the Top
During the last 30 minutes of baking, remove the foil and brush the remaining glaze over the ham. Return to the oven uncovered, allowing the glaze to bubble and caramelize.
  5. Rest and Serve
Once heated through and beautifully glazed, remove the ham from the oven. Let it rest for 10–15 minutes before slicing to keep it juicy.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use a fully cooked ham to keep preparation simple and ensure tenderness.
  • Baste occasionally with pan juices for extra flavor.
  • Leftovers make excellent sandwiches, omelets, or pasta additions.
